Welcome

Welcome to Professor Rachel Chung's Database course website!

This website is designed as an online repository of learning materials for the Chatham University course BUS213 Special Topics: Database Design for Environmental Sustainability.

Students enrolled in the course will access course instructions and materials through this website, and the Moodle site for the course.

Course Description

This course explores key topics of database management systems (RDBMS) in the context of sustainable decision making. Student teams will work with clients to analyze the environmental impact of commercial or consumer products, and use the analysis to conceptualize, design, and build a relational database system. Knowledge of the effects that commercial or consumer products have on the environment, and the role of human consumption in environmental processes and systems will critically inform the conceptualization of the database design.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Analyze criteria to make sustainable decisions that meet data storage, processing, and retrieval needs
2. Design and document data structures incorporating integrity constraints to satisfy sustainable decision making criteria by applying the relational model
3. Build, populate, and document a normalized database that meets sustainable decision making objectives using industry standards and best practices
4. Develop structured query language (SQL) queries to create, read, update, and delete relational database data

Learning Objectives for Chatham’s Mission Initiative in Environment

This course fulfills Chatham University’s Mission Initiative in Environment, and is designated as an ENV course. Completion of this course will fulfill these Environment Learning Objectives:

1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the effects that humans have on the environment.
2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of environmental processes and systems.
